The liminal archive

A digital repository of incomplete building projects and modernist ruins from Africa and across the globe.

By utilizing the technique of photogrammetry, we scan the un-finished structures building a world dedicated only to their skeletal carcasses. Our research and documentation have already taken us across West Africa and our ambitious vision extends further to encompass East, South and North Africa and beyond.

NDIOUGA KÉBÉ PALACE
Touba, Sénégal

This unfinished five-story palace near Touba, Senegal, was built in the early 1980s by businessman El Hadji Ndiouga Kébé as both his private residence and a tribute to Sufi saint Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. Inspired by Mali’s Great Mosque of Djenné, the structure remains untouched since Kébé’s death, with locals attributing a mythical power to its ornate concrete skeleton.

LA BEACH TOWERS
Accra, Ghana

The La Beach Towers on Accra’s coastline, once envisioned as a luxury residential development, has stood incomplete since 2016 following the murder of co-owner and Ghanaian Parliament member J. B. Danquah-Adu. Known as Accra’s "Empire State Building," the 17-story structure is now suffering from corrosion due to salt air. Locals are debating whether to demolish the building or repurpose it into a factory or warehouse to create jobs for nearby communities.

This 18-story building in Lagos, intended for the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, has remained unfinished for over 30 years.
